What Do I Need to Bring to a Notary Appointment?

Notarizing a document can be stressful if you’ve never done it before, but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you’re finalizing real estate paperwork, a marital decree, or a simple affidavit, being prepared will save you time and help your appointment go smoothly. Here’s a checklist to help you prepare:

Valid, unexpired photo identification

California law requires that a notary verify your identity. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Current state ID card
  • Passport issued by the United States, Canadian, or Mexican government
  • Inmate ID card or ID band
  • Any government issued ID that includes a photo, signature, physical description, and serial number

Note: the ID used must be current or issued within the last 5 years

If you do not have any of the above mentioned identification documents, please reach out to your notary to discuss alternative options.

Your unsigned document

Do NOT sign your document ahead of time. The notary must witness the signature being executed by you. If you sign it before being in the presence of a notary, you may need to execute a new signature. Some documents may even require a whole new document!

Witnesses, if required

Certain documents — like a Transfer On Death Deed — may require witnesses in addition to notarization. If your document does, you will need to arrange for witnesses to be present and they must also bring their valid photo IDs. If you are unsure, please reach out to your notary with your documents to discuss.

Relevant supporting documents

Some documents — like a Grant Deed or Form DS-3053 — may require additional documents to review prior to notarization. If you are unsure, reach out to the organization that issued the document.

Quick tip: If you have questions about what to bring, it is always better to ask in advance. A quick call or text can prevent delays, extra trips, and unnecessary charges.
